The body of a young woman was found face down in the sand near West Ocean Front and Highland Street Monday morning, according to a police statement.

The Newport Beach Police Department responded to a call around 6 a.m. on Monday about a woman, who appeared to be unconscious, lying face down in the sand near lifeguard tower 71, said police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

“Someone walking on the beach made the initial call in to our dispatch center,” Lowe said in an email.

Both police and fire departments responded, finding the woman deceased when they arrived on scene, according to the statement.

Police described the woman as 5 feet 2 inches, thin build and in her mid-20s.

Lowe said that any other information, including if she was clothed or if there were any signs of trauma, are part of an ongoing investigation and are not being released at this time.

The coroner’s office at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating cause of death. Her identity has not yet been determined.

Police are asking anyone with any information to contact Detective Garrett Fitzgerald at (949) 644-3797.
