A woman died Tuesday evening after the vehicle she was driving hit a light pole near San Miguel and Pacific View drives, according to authorities.
At 8:49 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department was notified of a single-vehicle traffic collision near the intersection, NBPD spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella wrote in a statement released on Wednesday.
Officers found the female driver as the only occupant in the grey Ford Fusion. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The identity of the driver is not available at this time, pending identification and notification of her next of kin.
Police have determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Pacific View Drive when it left the roadway and collided with a light standard. The Orange County coroner’s office listed the location as the “dirt embankment next to bank parking lot.”
A preliminary investigation indicates that “excessive speed” appeared to be a contributing factor. Police are waiting on the coroner’s toxicology results to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved, Manzella explained on Thursday.
The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.
