Councilman Don “Walkin’ Don” Webb, who ended his eight-year council career with Tuesday’ nights meeting, passed another milestone this week as he stepped past an impromptu finish line at the westernmost city limit to complete a year-long quest to walk every street in Newport Beach.
Webb began his walk last Dec. 9, at the city’s easternmost point, in the Newport Coast. Webb walked a mile or two several days a week, keeping track of his progress on a large wall map and maintaining a journal. In all, he calculates, he walked some 505.6 miles.
On hand at the Santa Ana River bridge this morning were Webb’s wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, several council colleagues, City Manager David Kiff, and a dozen or so friends and supporters.
It is the fifth time Webb has walked the city. He says he has no plans to do it again.
