UC Irvine placed 10th at the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association Team Racing National Championships, completed May 30 in Cascade Locks, Ore.
Fourteen teams from across the country fought it out for the top spot. The teams were split into brackets of seven teams, and UC Irvine was grouped with four top-ranked teams; Georgetown, Yale, Roger Williams, and College of Charleston. This made for an extremely difficult first round for all teams.
With only one round of racing to determine which teams would advance to the next round, the Anteaters had their work cut out for them. The variable breeze and current ripping at nearly seven knots on top of cutthroat teams, the Anteaters left the first round with a 2–4 record, just one win out of qualifying for the next round.
UCI was placed in the consolation round and took 10th overall.
There were many familiar faces at Team Racing Nationals this year. Yale placed 7th overall with both Heather May and Chris Segerblom. St. Mary’s took 5th overall with local Michael Menninger sailing his last collegiate team race regatta. Georgetown fought it out for 4th place, with Charlie Buckingham and Chris Barnard. Charleston, with a 10 – 7 record, took 3rd overall with Mac Mace, Brooks Clark, and Perry Emsiek. Boston College placed 2nd while a team not predicted to do as well as they did took first with a 13 – 4 record, Roger Williams.
