A group of Corona del Mar High School dancers thrilled a packed theater over the weekend, with a variety of styles and techniques as they danced through time.

The Orchesis Dance Company performed “Turning Back Time – Retracing the Steps of History,” at the Loats Theater at Newport Harbor High School during the opening weekend.

Each dance opened with a video presentation, setting the audience up for the story the following dance would tell.

The 25 girls performed pieces like “The Beginning,” “Queen of the Nile,” and “The Brits Are Here.”

They depicted times of war, opulence, and hysteria. The dancers represented characters that loved, lost, triumphed and died.

“It’s an experience,” Orchesis director, Cami Marseilles, said prior to the show. “You sit down and we take you on a ride…of traveling through time.”

The show was a compilation of 21 dances, most of which the students choreographed themselves. Styles ranged from musical theater to hip-hop to ballet

The second act was more personal, with videos of the girls opening each number, like “A Day in the Life of an Orchesis Dancer,” and the dance numbers did not continue the “Time” theme. Pieces included, “Intoxicated Love,” “Breaking the Sterotype,” and “Let’s Go to the Beach.” They also had “Seniors” and “Boys” dances.
