Over 100 junior sabot sailors descended on NHYC last weekend for the Spring Gold Cup Regatta. With the local Balboa Bay Fleet slated to host the Junior Sabot Nationals this coming August, many of the top sabot sailors from all over Southern California showed up to get experience on the local race course.
Winds were a steady 10-15 knot SW all day Saturday, helping the race committee 4-5 races for each class in the first day. This turned out to be fortuitous because a storm front came through Sunday, and strong winds kept junior sailors from leaving the dock.
Overall winner in Class A was defending Sabot National Champion Riley Gibbs from Alamitos Bay. Top local finishers in Class A were Rhodes Garner (NHYC), Derek Pickell (BCYC) and Sean Segerblom (NHYC) in 3rd., 4th, and 5th respectively. Other top finishers included Katie Lutrell (BYC) and Patrick Shannon (NHYC), 2nd and 3rd in Class B; Andrew Potter and Megan Windsor (both NHYC) 1st and 3rd in Class C2; and Ryan Potter (NHYC) 1st in Class C3.
