The 20th Annual Share Our Selves Team Onion Luncheon held at Five Crowns Restaurant last month honored the Star Team, a generous guild of Share Our Selves led by longtime Newport Beach resident Kathy Thompson.

A plaque commemorating 20 years of service was presented to Thompson by Jean Forbath, SOS’s founder and Karen McGlinn, Executive Director of SOS.

Thompson is the founder of the Star Team, and the A-Team President. She has made giving a gift of Imperial County Sweet Onions to friends and family a passion.

For many years the Thompson family hosted a lunch for friends where Kathy prepared many onion recipes including cream of onion soup and onion ice cream.

Though the event has moved to Five Crowns to accommodate the growing number of guests, as per tradition, there is a huge mound of bagged onions that are given to guests – a tasty take-away surprise for newcomers.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, Kathy Thompson was better known as Kathy Marlowe, a Hollywood beauty who starred in dozens of movies and TV shows. But today, retired and known locally by her married name of Kathy Thompson, she is doing everything she can to help SOS bring medical, dental and financial services to the underprivileged of Newport-Mesa.

Over the past 20 years, the A and Star Teams have raised over $800,000 including $40,000 from this luncheon to assist Share Our Selves, a nonprofit organization that provides critical safety net services for low-income and homeless individuals and families in Orange County.
