Quarterback Brent Lawson, running back, Erik Fisher, wide receivers Josh Giger and Troy Reese, tight-end Matt English, and linebackers, Aaron White, Frasier Anderson, Grant Garrett and David Moore, all Varsity player for the Corona del Mar football team, have one word on their minds and that is “playoffs.”

Tonight at 7:30, in the first round of the CIF playoffs. Corona Del Mar’s varsity football team, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Division, will face off against Westminster. The Sea Kings will be competing as the home team on Davidson Field at Newport Harbor High School.

“I am confident in our team,” said Head Coach Scott Meyer. “As long as we play well I think the outcome will be favorable for us, but we must not take Westminster lightly.”

Looking at experience, CdM has quite a large group of seniors who played well in the semi-finals last year. This could give the Sea Kings a bit of an edge.

Even though this is an important game, the CdM team is treating it just as they would any other game- they are going back to the basics at practice and fixing up the areas where they think they can improve.

Their game-day rituals will stay the same, with team walk-throughs, meetings and then finishing it off with a hearty and protein-filled team meal in the field house on the high school’s campus. After that, the players will get taped up and dress in their blue and silver gear, then travel to Newport Harbor’s stadium, which is CdM’s home field.

“This team never quits, “ said Meyer, “and we have great senior leadership and talented leaders that play very well together as a team.”
