Newport Harbor High School parent David Pyle astonished guests and Principal Michael Vossen last weekend when he presented multiple donations totaling $610,000 to Newport Harbor Educational Foundation, NHHS Women’s Field Hockey, and NHHS Men’s Lacrosse programs.
This brought Mr. Pyle’s total donations to the high school to $1,153,000 over the past 14 years.
“As my last two teens graduate from Newport Harbor High School, I want to show my gratitude to the school that gave all four of my children an excellent education,” Pyle said. “Newport Harbor High School is our community asset, and I want to give back after receiving so many benefits.”
Pyle, who is the founder and CEO of American Career College and executive chairman of the board of West Coast University, was being honored for years of “exemplary philanthropy and matching gifts to Newport Harbor High School” at the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation’s annual donor appreciation event.
Since 2007, Pyle has offered to match $5000-plus donations to the foundation, inspiring families and the community to support NHHS. He presented his 2012 matching gift of $100,000 to Diana Long, executive director of the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation (NHEF) at the event. He then surprised the entire gathering and presented a second check for $310,000.
Pyle also recognized two Newport Harbor High coaches – NHHS Women’s Field Hockey Coach Amanda Boyer and NHHS Men’s Lacrosse Coach Mark Todd – saying, “I want to shine a light on these two superior coaches who have served my teens well.”
He then presented each coach with a check for $100,000, to be used for their programs over a four-year period.
