Summertime is a terrific time to take a day trip to Catalina. It’s easy to pack a lot into a day trip to the island that’s “22 miles across the sea,” as the song says. Fellow Indy writer Catherine Del Casale and I boarded the Catalina Flyer in Balboa Village at 9 a.m. and 90 minutes later were strolling the streets of Avalon. After browsing gift shops, we had a relaxing lunch at Bluewater Grill (the sister restaurant to the one in Newport) on a deck overlooking Avalon Harbor. Then it was time for a little excitement—a Zip Line Eco Tour that traverses hundreds of feet above the mountains near the harbor. Nothing beats the thrill of zipping along at high speed while dangling above boulders and brush. After our Zip Line tour, another leisurely stroll brought us back to the Catalina Flyer and the return to Balboa Village.
