The Newport Harbor YC team (No. 6) leads the pack in one of the NYYC Invitational Regatta races.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s team finished a respectable fifth out of 22 international teams at New York Yacht Club’s second bi-annual Invitational Regatta last week.

Team Canada, made up of members of the 1983 Canadian America’s Cup team, dominated the event, followed by host New York YC, Annapolis YC and Eastern YC (Marblehead, Mass.).  With NHYC’s fifth-place finish, the Newport Harbor team earned an automatic invite back to New York Yacht Club’s next race in 2013.

This exclusive invitational event was open to 22 top amateur yacht club teams from around the world.  The NHYC team was led by Jim Madden, and included Payson Infelese who skippered the NHYC’s boat in this event’s qualifier.  The NHYC team also included NHYC Commodore Jeff Gordon and Rear Commodore Paul Marshall.

More than 50 local sailors traveled to Newport, RI, to follow the event.
