According to a press release from the Newport Beach Fire Department, on Jan. 10 at 12:07 a.m., a 911 caller reported smoke and flames emanating from a structure in the 500 block of Clubhouse Avenue.

Eleven Newport Beach Fire Department units, assisted by the Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach Fire Departments, responded to the scene. The first units arriving reported that the upper portion of the two-story residential structure (a duplex) was well involved with fire.

Responding personnel were able to extinguish the fire within 30 minutes. Although homes on both sides of the structure were initially threatened, aggressive measures taken by the first units arriving on scene prevented any damage to neighboring homes. While the lower unit sustained smoke and water damage, all fire damage was confined to the unit where the fire originated.

One firefighter was injured and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment; he has since been released. There were no civilian injuries or casualties. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and damage is currently estimated at approximately $500,000.
