The body of a swimmer was recovered just south of Newport Pier on the Peninsula Wednesday afternoon.
The victim was a male in his mid-20s who had been swimming between 18th and 19th streets, said Newport Beach Fire Department spokesman Matt Brisbois.
Lifeguards received a call from the 911 dispatch about a missing swimmer in that area at 1:09 p.m., Brisbois said. Immediately after receiving the call, 14 lifeguard rescue swimmers and two lifeguard dive team members responded as well as additional assistance from nearby police, fire and lifeguard teams.
A buoy was dropped at the point where the man was last seen and the rescue teams started a systematic grid search.
The man’s body was pulled from the surf near 20th Street just after 2 p.m., Brisbois said. After unsuccessful resuscitation attempts he was pronounced dead at the scene, Brisbois said.
There was 3- to 5-foot surf at the time of the search.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim.
