To seal a bet over whose citizens will conserve the most water, the mayors of Newport and Laguna Beach today kickoff the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation at Newport’s Back Bay Science Center.

As part of a challenge to mayors across the nation by the foundation established by the Laguna Beach artist Wyland, Laguna’s Mayor Jane Egly and Newport Beach Mayor Nancy Gardner will urge residents to conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollution throughout April.

Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge – and sign an online pledge – can win. A victory could mean a share of a $50,000 prize package, including a Toyota Prius Hybrid, custom-designed sprinkler systems from Rain Bird, Eco-Flow Showerheads from WaterPik, Sterling water-saving toilets, and gift cards from Lowe’s Home Improvement stores for residents who took the challenge.

Residents can pledge at www.mywaterpledge.com to help make their city water wise.
