Michael Madigan, Jimmy Madigan, and Jack Thompson (all of the CdM High School sailing team) traveled back to Oyster Bay, NY, to participate in the Oakcliff Sailing Center’s Summer Invitational, a special youth match racing event.
The boys also got the benefit of sailing with legendary sailing coach Dave Perry.
Oakcliff Sailing was founded by America’s Cup and Volvo Race veteran Dawn Riley, and they have a fleet of identical Swedish Match 40s. After four days of combined clinic and racing, Michael, Jack and Jimmy took first place at this event. Look for Michael make good use of his new match racing skills later this month when he represents NHYC at Balboa Yacht Club’s Governor’s Cup.
Summer Gold Cup, NHYC (Junior Sabots)
Over 75 junior Sabot sailors descended on Newport’s turning basin last weekend for NHYC’s Summer Gold Cup. The “Gold Cup” is traditionally one of the largest junior sabot regattas, leading up to next month’s Junior Sabot Nationals. This year’s “Sabot Nationals” will be held in Alamitos Bay (Long Beach), and are expected to attract top Sabot sailors from throughout Southern California.
While breezes were generally lighter on Saturday, they filled in nicely on Sunday with a steady 10-15 knot westerly. Long Beach sailor Jacob Rosenberg sailed away with an impressive 12-point win in this seven-race series, over defending junior sabot champion Joseph Hou.
Due to bay dredging, no races were sailed for Sabot C1 and Sabot C2 classes.
