The Newport Harbor High School surf team which took 3rd place overall in the highly competitive National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Championships this past weekend at Salt Creek.
Teams traveled from the East Coast, Hawaii and throughout the West to compete in this highly competitive surfing event.
Blake Davis, a junior, got second place overall in the High School Varsity division beating out world standouts Ezekiel Lau, who is rated #1 in Hawaii NSSA and competes on the Hawaiian International team, and Derek Peter, who is on the USA Surf Team.
Stellar performances also were turned in by Shelby Detmers, a junior, who took 2nd overall by beating out some of the top female surfers in the country.
Both Blake and Shelby were leading throughout the finals only to be outdone in the final minutes of their surfing heats.
The team effort was also helped by team members Zach Porteous, Jake Caughill, Colin Moran, Will Laidlaw, Ryan Croteau and Aaron Cervantes. The girls were helped by the surfing of Ali Hayes.
