A Costa Mesa woman was pronounced dead at the scene of an early Wednesday morning accident on MacArthur Boulevard, authorities said.

Angelina Paz, 45, was killed at 3:34 a.m. when the vehicle she was riding in struck a fixed street object, according to a press release from the Orange County Coroner’s Office. She was riding in the front passenger seat, according to police.

Another passenger, a 21-year-old female, was transported to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition, said Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe. The driver, Jose Paz, 22, of Costa Mesa, declined to be transported to a hospital, Lowe added.

The single-vehicle accident occurred on MacArthur Blvd. near Bonita Canyon Drive/Ford Road, just south of Vilaggio, Lowe said.

The 2001 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on MacArthur when it veered off the road and struck a light post on the west curb line.

The accident is currently under investigation, Lowe said, but it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were involved.

MacArthur Boulevard was shut down for some time and traffic was backed up surrounding the area until about 10 a.m.

Traffic was still bumper to bumper around 9:30 a.m. on MacArthur. Police had just cleared the accident site.

Investigators gathered evidence and talked to witnesses, Lowe said, and will try to piece together what happened.

The name of the third victim has not yet been released.
