If you build it, they will come…and use the new synthetic fields recently installed at Bonita Creek Park.

The city of Newport Beach this week unveiled the new artificial turf, which took about four months to install (including removal of the old grass).

The 157,000 square feet of synthetic turf will save an estimated 3.25 million gallons of water a year and reduce maintenance costs and downtime.

The Municipal Water District of Orange County gave the City a $312,602 rebate for installing the new synthetic turf surface, which has a lifespan of eight to 13 years.

The synthetic turf is made by Field Turf, which is used nationwide by professional sports teams and universities.

The field will be used by the Newport Mesa Girls Fastpitch Softball, AYSO, Junior All-American Football, adult soccer, turf 2 and softball.

Total cost of the project was $1.9 million.
