After a nationwide search, Harbor Day School has appointed Dr. Daniel Greenwood as the new head of school.
“I can’t wait to join the Harbor Day School community. The school clearly lives up to its mission of being family-centered and well-balanced, as well as offering a nurturing environment,” Greenwood said.
Greenwood is coming to Corona del Mar from Pasadena, where he was the assistant head of school and director of middle school at Chandler School. Before that he taught social studies and math at Saint Paul’s School in Clearwater, Fla., and was on the administrative staff at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Va.
The kindergarten through eighth grade independent school hired a professional search consultant to find the best candidate for the position.
The school’s search committee reviewed the top 13 candidates presented to them by a professional search consultant and then interviewed the top five choices. Two final choices then visited the school and met with the committee, who then recommended Greenwood to the school’s board of trustees for the position.
“We heard from Chandler teachers, parents and board members about the love and respect that everyone has for Dr. Greenwood. He is personable with a certain charisma and leadership ability,” said Angi Evans, co-chair of the search committee. “The consistent remarks focused on his personality being outgoing, engaging, positive and cheerful. He consistently models professionalism, integrity and intellectual ambition to students and staff.”
“The trustees were impressed by Dr. Greenwood’s intelligence, warmth, character, dedication, and belief in the mission of Harbor Day School and are confident that he has the talents to lead the school with passion and vision,” said Scott Shean, president of Harbor Day School’s board of trustees.
The new school leader received his bachelor of arts degree from University of New Hampshire and his master’s and doctorate of education degrees from University of Virginia.
“He has a strong background in the integration of technology into curriculum,” according to at school statement, including implementing a middle school laptop program at Chandler School in Pasadena.
He helped design and supervise construction of a new middle school building, originated a “buddy” program to better integrate Chandler’s middle school and lower school students, and worked closely with students and parents to place graduates in competitive area high schools.
Greenwood assumed his new position on July 1.
