“66” Series Balboa Yacht Club (PHRF)

I happened to stop by Newport’s Life Guard Headquarters Sunday afternoon to witness first-hand the brutal weather systems that were passing through last weekend.  The ocean off Newport was solid white-caps, and sand and spray were blowing steadily up across the Newport Pier.  During the time we were at Lifeguard HQ, the wind velocity never seemed to drop below 30 knots, and was saw peak gusts spiking over 40 knots several times.

Not surprisingly, with major storm systems passing through our area last weekend, virtually all the scheduled sailing events in our area were cancelled.

But, despite stormy, rainy conditions, 13 boats still made it out Saturday afternoon for the kick off race of Balboa Yacht Club’s annual “66” Series.  All finishers in these rough conditions are listed below and should be acknowledged for their fortitude just getting out to race a 10 mile course in wet, challenging conditions.
