More than 2,500 students and parents attended the 2011 Newport-Mesa Unified School District College Night at the fairgrounds on Wednesday.
The Harbor Council PTA sponsored event featured about 140 different colleges from across California and around the country,” said organizer Jolene Benedetti.
“It’s a great way to gather information about many different schools,” all at once, Benedetti said.
It’s nice for students to be able to communicate with college reps and learn about a college from an actual person, she said, rather than just from a website.
Representatives from many certificate programs, such as computer programming, graphic design, cosmetology, culinary schools and fashion design, also attended the event.
Some Corona del Mar High School students and parents, like junior Roberto Weismann and his mother Francesca, attended the College Admissions Insight Night on Tuesday to learn more and get prepared for the event. Rick Diaz from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, had some very helpful tips, the Weismann’s said.
There are many NMUSD college prep related workshops and discussions throughout the school year, check each school’s online calendar for specific dates and events.
The annual College Night event is just one of many and it’s a great way to start of the year and a good first step toward choosing a college, Benedetti said.
