A Los Angeles teenager faces multiple charges after he stole a car from a local dealership and crashed it into a closed motel in West Newport early Monday morning.
The Newport Beach Police Department received a report from Sterling BMW’s alarm company at 12:20 a.m. Monday of a burglary and theft of three vehicles at 3000 W. Coast Hwy., Newport Beach police spokeswoman Heather Rangel said.
“Upon arrival and in the same area, the officers located one of the vehicles,” Rangel said. “They tried to get the driver to yield. He did not yield until he eventually crashed into a building.”
On Scene TV reported a blue BMW sedan crashed into the Pine Knot Motel at 6302 W. Coast Hwy. The property coincidentally was one of three locations the Newport Beach City Council considered, but ultimately dismissed, on Wednesday as a future site for an emergency homeless shelter.
The 17-year-old driver — whose name is not being released because he is a minor — was arrested on suspicion of evading a police officer, grand theft auto, commercial burglary with forced entry, hit and run with property damage, false identification to a police officer, and violating curfew, Rangel said.
She added Wednesday that only one person arrested in connection to this incident and she didn’t know what became of the other two vehicles reported stolen. Newport Beach police are still investigating the incident.
