A woman reported several pieces of lost jewelry worth a total of $292,000 to the police on Oct. 20.
The woman reported that she placed four pieces of jewelry in a plastic container and put the container in her purse, said Newport Beach Police Department Sgt. Steve Burdette.
She then took her purse to a shoe repair shop to be fixed, with the container still inside, he said. A few days later she picked up her purse and saw that the container and jewelry were both missing, Burdette said.
At this point it is unknown what the repair shop’s account of the incident is, said Burdette, and that will be something the detectives will find out. It is also unknown if the purse was sent out for repairs or stayed in-house, Burdette said, but he added that he assumed the repairs were done on the premises.
The property was lost between Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, according to the police report.
The jewelry reported missing included a $35,000 light yellow diamond ring, $93,000 cat’s-eye diamond ring, $134,000 white and yellow gold ring with a fancy yellow diamond, and a $30 gold link chain bracelet.
Police are continuing to investigate and anyone with any information is urged to contact the Newport Beach Police Department.
