On Monday, Newport Beach Police Department sent out an alert warning residents about an interrupted burglary at a home in Corona del Mar.

The incident occurred in the 2800 block of Bayside Dr., around 6:10 p.m. on Saturday, according to police.

“While the victim was out to dinner, an unknown suspect attempted to enter the bathroom window using a ladder found on the side of the residence,” authorities explained in the message.

The suspect removed the window screen and was attempting to open the window when the victim returned home.

“The victim yelled at the suspect who jumped off the ladder and fled the scene,” police wrote.

The suspect was wearing khaki pants and a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Nothing was reported stolen.

Police also used the message to remind residents to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

NBPD also provided some home security tips, including: Secure second story windows & doors as if they were on the first story; Ladders should be stored inside or locked to a stationary object; and always lock your windows and doors when you go out, even if for only a few minutes.

There are numerous ways homeowners can “harden the target” to deter criminals, police noted.

When leaving on vacation, remember to call the police department for a “Vacation Check” at (949) 644-3681. Also, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up the newspaper and mail while away.
