An Outdoor Emergency Notification System has been installed along the Balboa Peninsula and in West Newport and the city will intermittently test the new system through Dec. 7.
The system consists of three emergency warning sirens that are connected to a control panel located at the Newport Beach Police Department. Each siren is approximately four feet high and is mounted on a blue, 50-foot pole. The sirens have been placed so as to be heard in West Newport, along the Balboa Peninsula, and at Big Corona Beach.
Area residents and businesses may hear the sirens sound as the City staff and its contractor will be conducting final system checks through Wednesday.
Beginning Jan. 7, the system will be tested regularly, on the first Friday of each month at noon for a very short period at a reduced sound level.
When activated for actual emergency notifications, the sirens will sound for an extended time at a much higher sound level.
Hed: Higgins Tapped for Visit Newport
Visit Newport Beach Inc has appointed Vicki Higgins senior vice president of marketing.
Higgins, a five-year veteran of LA INC., the convention and visitors bureau in Los Angeles, was most recently senior director of business development and strategic partnerships there. In all, she has more than 20 years of marketing experience in the sports, airline and travel industries.

At Visit Newport Beach Inc., Higgins will lead a team of four marketing professionals to oversee brand management and marketing; public relations; marketing communications; social media; leisure sales; international sales and marketing and meetings/group marketing.
She is a native of Indiana and holds an undergraduate degree from Indiana State University and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Hed: Forgery Suspect Arrested for Threats
A Riverside man suspected of forgery was arrested Tuesday in Newport Beach after allegedly sending threatening text messages to the victim.
Eric Jerome Etherly II, 21, was brought into the Newport Beach Police Department for questioning as a forgery suspect. The forgery case involves stolen checks, said Newport Beach Sgt. Steve Burdette.
Etherly apparently knew the victim and had sent several threatening text messages to the victim, Burdette said.
Etherly was arrested for threatening a crime with intent to terrorize. His bail was set at $50,000.
The forgery investigation is ongoing.
