Newport Beach Police Department sent out an alert Wednesday warning residents about crime during the holidays and providing tips to help prevent it.
The “’tis the season for thieving” message also wished citizens a “safe and happy holiday season.”
For those staying home: Always lock all doors and windows when leaving; Use timers to turn on a radio and lights, give the appearance that someone is there; Avoid displaying holiday gifts and other valuables in places where they can be seen from windows or doors; Always keep porch lights on from dusk to dawn; and when leaving for dinner or to go out for the evening, consider leaving the TV on and calling out to a fictitious family member or roommate (who will “stay home”).
If decorating a live tree, always turn off tree lights when away to prevent a fire.
Call the police to report anything suspicious at NBPD’s non-emergency line at (949) 644-3717.
When going away for the holidays: Have a trusted neighbor watch the home and pick-up newspapers and mail; Don’t advertise about going out of town in phone message or social profile; and secure garage door with a vacation bolt or pad lock and disable the remote access.
Police also encourage residents to call NBPD and request a free Vacation Check at (949) 644-3681.
