As of Thursday afternoon, initial results from Tuesday’s primary election showed Newport Beach City Councilman Keith Curry leading the 74th District Assembly race.
Curry edged out his competition in the primary election this week, receiving 27.8 percent of the votes counted so far, according to the voting results websites of Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Orange County Registrar of Voters.
Coming in a close second was fellow republican Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper at 24.4 percent.
The latest figures on Thursday afternoon showed that Curry received 12,493 votes and Harper with 10,958.
Trailing them were democrats Anila Ali with 8,870 votes or 19.8 percent, Karina Onofre 7,067 votes or 15.7 percent, and republican Emanuel Petrascu with 5,522 votes or 12.3 percent.
There are still approximately 94,264 total ballots left to count, including vote-by-mail ballots- both those mailed in and returned to the polls, and provisional and Election Day paper ballots.
Orange County saw a surprisingly low turnout of voters this week, according to reports.
Out of the 1,411,232 registered voters in Orange County, Thursday’s estimates showed about 17.4 percent total cast ballots as of Thursday afternoon, 245,809
The 74th District covers Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Beach and Laguna Woods.
In other election news, incumbent Tony Rackauckas had a large lead (72.8 percent) over Greg Diamond for OC District Attorney.
In the County Supervisor district 2 race, Michelle Steel was in front with 46.7 percent. Allan Mansoor and Jim Moreno were close coming in second and third with 23.5 and 21.4 percent, respectively. Joe Carchio trailed with 8.3 percent.
Incumbent Dana Rohrabacher was easily leading the way in California’s 48th congressional district race with 55.3 percent.
