NBPD Officer-Involved Shooting

According to a press release from the Newport Beach Police Department, on Thursday, May 29, at approximately 8:16 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department’s Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a convenience store in the 1400 block of Superior Avenue.

The caller reported that a male subject at the location was causing a disturbance.

Officers responded to the scene and used both less-lethal force and firearms on the subject when he charged at them with a sharp metal instrument in his hand.

The subject was subsequently transported to Western Medical Trauma Center for medical treatment. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening. The subject’s name is being withheld pending identification by the Coroner’s Office.

No officers were injured during the incident; however, a store clerk sustained minor injuries during the altercation with the suspect.

The Orange County District Attorney’s office will conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Additional information will be released as the investigation allows.
