This past weekend marked the final high school fleet racing regatta of the season, as the ISSA Nationals Mallory Trophy was hosted by Austin Yacht Club on Lake Travis.

Shifty breezes and 20 intensely competitive teams made for a nerve-racking regatta.  Local teams Corona del Mar High School and Newport Harbor High School both qualified for Nationals this year, but both struggled through challenging conditions.

Lake Travis has depths ranging anywhere from 12 to 120 feet.  The breeze held between 12 to 20 knots from the south with at least two to three huge shifts per beat.  And the race committee chose to complete three race sets, adding yet another curve ball.  All of these challenges caused both CdM and Newport Harbor to carry several deep races into the second day.

Both teams really had to give it their all on Sunday.  Antilles was winning by a considerable margin.  And at this point, both local teams were fighting just to crack the top three.

The last five races CdM and Newport Harbor were battling it out for 5th place overall.  And it came down to the very last race.  Newport was only 3 points behind CdM, but CdM won the final race to edge Newport out of the No. 5 spot.

Five of the top seven teams were Southern California teams, proving the true depth of talent in the West.
