CdM Stadium Discussed:

Several Eastbluff residents attended the city council meeting on Tuesday with complaints and concerns about the $7.4 million sports stadium the Newport-Mesa Unified School District recently approved to be built at Corona del Mar High School.

It would have a negative impact on the community, residents said. Speakers complained about traffic, parking, lighting, vandalism, noise, safety issues and more.

The city has influence on the issue, but has no judicial discretion, councilman Tony Petros explained.

The city is already trying to make a difference in the area, he continued, and have already made changes concerning the parking.

In the upcoming weeks, Petros and city manager Dave Kiff will be meeting with NMUSD superintendent Dave Navarro and school board member Karen Yelsey about the stadium and how it will affect the community.

Package Thefts:

Police sent out a community message this week reporting several package thefts and warned residents to protect themselves against thieves.

Last week there were three package thefts from Newport Beach porches: 600 block of Poppy Ave. on Nov. 15; 400 Block of Vista Roma on Nov. 18; and 3000 Block of Corte Portofino on Nov. 21.

A few tips from the Newport Beach Police Department: Choose to sign for the package upon delivery; check the scheduled delivery time and try to choose a date and time, if possible; and let a trusted neighbor know you are expecting a delivery and have them take it when arrives.

Police urge residents to call if they see anyone taking packages from a doorstop or if they see someone following a delivery truck.

Help stop disappearing deliveries by reporting all suspicious activity, to the Newport Beach Police Department at (949) 644-3717.

Man Arrested for Attempted Residential Burglary:

A man was arrested for residential burglary this week, police reported.

Larry Lee Everett, 57, of Orange was arrested by Saturday around 6:49 p.m. after he was detained by a private security guard at a residence in the 4600 block of Brighton Road.

The guard had caught Everett after he attempted to climb over the backyard gate in an attempt to burglarize the residence.

“Officers on scene searched Everett’s backpack and found multiple burglary tools, including a grappling hook, gloves, and a pry bar,” according to Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

He was arrested for attempted residential burglary and detectives also requesting possession of burglary tools charges. He is being held on $50,000 bail, in addition to two burglary warrants for $50,000 and $1,000,000.

“Everett is believed to be a professional burglar targeting affluent communities, high-end homes, and expensive jewelry,” Manzella wrote in a statement.

He may be connected to other Newport Beach residential burglaries and are currently investigating him.

Anyone with more information on this case is encouraged to contact Detective Dave Darling at (949) 644-3799 or the Newport Beach Police Department Hotline at 1-800-550-NBPD. Messages can be left anonymously.
