Being a part of something big is now easier than ever.

The website kickstarter.com allows people to fund creative projects and businesses.

Kickstarter is an online site for people to help crowdfund creative projects. Launched in 2009, the site allows artists, designers, filmmakers and others to pitch their ideas to the world and receive monetary backing for specific projects.

“If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen,” the website explains.

Each project has a pre-set funding goal and a deadline, both chosen by the creator.

If the campaign is successful and the funding goal is reached, backer’s credit cards are charged and the money goes toward the project. The project will only receive the funds if it reaches the pre-set goal. If the project fails to reach it’s target, none of the backers get charged and the project gets no money. It’s an all-or-nothing situation.

If a project is successfully funded, Kickstarter applies a five percent fee to the funds collected. If the project does not reach its funding goal, there are no fees.

The site is becoming more and more popular as a way for people to get their ideas off the ground and help their dreams become reality.

There are many Newport Beach-based projects that have found success on Kickstarter, including: Coding for Entrepreneurs, a project-based programming class for non-technical founders, which surpassed it’s goal by 725 percent; or the Mach 9 Feature Film Movie Screening at Lido Theater, which was 133 percent funded and held the screening on April 4; or Vibe & High‘s spring 2013 active lifestyle movement/collection.

Currently, there are two very different Newport Beach-based clothing designers with kickstarter campaigns: Max & Mommy maternity lingerie and Rocksteady Clothing streetwear.

Other current Newport Beach based or related projects include: Kevin Bachelder’s “What Lies Beneath” music video and CD album; and making a film from the book, “The Orange County Heads,” which documents the author’s life in the 1950s and 1960s in Anaheim, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and other OC locations.
