A quick look at the things that made news this week in Newport Beach:
– The fire department and emergency crews responded to a downed bicyclist on Newport Coast Road Saturday. Until emergency officials arrived, the unconscious woman was tended to by her husband and bystanders.
She was immobilized and taken to the hospital. Her condition was listed as “serious.”
– A car hit a woman while she was walking her dog near Newport Coast Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road Tuesday night, sending her flying through the air. She was transported to the hospital as a critical trauma. Her dog was injured, but its condition was not disclosed.
– Newport Beach Councilman Tony Petros had a cardiac episode while riding his bike last week, the Orange County Register reported. He spent time at Hoag Hospital recovering and was back to work Tuesday. Petros said doctors put in a stint, the paper reported. Petros is a triathlete.
– Health officials ordered the temporary closure of Big Belly Deli, reported Patch.com.
The restaurant was cited for a baker’s dozen of violations. The health officials even found cockroaches around food prep and cleaning areas. They also found a winged insect in a container of hardboiled eggs.
– Issuing a request for bids to design alternatively fueled fire rings this week, the South Coast Air Quality Management District is searching out a compromise of sorts to the contentious fire ring issue, reported The Log.
The AQMD wants to install fire rings that are fueled by propane or natural gas to establish buffer zones for nearby homeowners along the coast in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
The closing date for proposals is Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m.
– The Orange County Business Journal honored Newport Beach & Company, naming it the best place to work in Orange County, reported PRWeb.
The award was based on assessments of company practices and surveys taken by employees.
