Construction is underway at Jamboree and San Joaquin Hills roads, and Southern California Edison crews are working along San Joaquin and Marguerite Avenue. And a major city project that could disrupt Corona del Mar traffic for an entire year is about to begin next week.

“Preliminary work will begin next week with potholing and dig-alerts (marking out existing utilities),” a city official said in an email. “Work should begin the week of July 1 in the Pacific View Drive/San Miguel Drive area. We anticipate completing construction in Summer 2014.”

The project, which will replace 1.6 miles of water transmission pipes, will interrupt traffic between Pacific View Drive to Bayside Drive.

Crews will begin in the Harbor Day School area, possibly closing a nearby stretch of San Miguel for a few weeks to allow construction crews to stage large excavating equipment. The project eventually will move to the East Coast Highway area, where crews will bore under East Coast Highway at Carnation Avenue. The construction will move a block or two at a time along Carnation Avenue and along sections of Fifth Avenue and Dahlia Avenue as well as along MacArthur Boulevard.

The $4,402,750 million project will add a new water main to transport water from the Big Canyon Reservoir and into the city’s water distribution system and improve water pressure in Corona del Mar.

City officials have advised Corona del Mar residents to be prepared for traffic delays, adding that this is a once-in-a lifetime project that will upgrade pipes, some that date to the 1920s.

Another project currently underway along San Joaquin Hills Road between Crown Drive and Marguerite Avenue is a SoCal Edison project that is replacing vaults and cables for system reliability, city officials said.

A city project that has closed some lanes of Jamboree Road and San Joaquin Hills Road is expected to be complete this week.
