Akiba just departed from South Africa and his experiences so far have been beyond rewarding.
His voyage began in Nassau, Bahamas, where his parents waved him off from the dock, wishing him safe travels. He and his shipmates have called at five ports thus far.
“After each port I have come away with a new understanding of the different cultures and lifestyles of people from all over the world,” Akiba wrote in an email.
Rosseau, Dominica, had magnificent waterfalls and sheer cliffs, Akiba wrote, that took the Semester at Sea (SAS) students’ breath away. The locals were so genuine in Takoradi, Ghana, they put Akiba’s own way of living into perspective, he wrote.
“So far I can honestly say that Semester at Sea has been an absolutely whirlwind adventure filled with surprises and unbelievable new experiences,” Akiba wrote. “More than anything it has provided with with a reflection of my own existence as an American living in Newport Beach and so far we are only at port number 4.”
