“9 to 5: The Musical” is set to punch in on Tuesday for a six-night run at Segerstrom Hall.
The award-winning Broadway musical comedy, based on the 1980 movie about three female employees who set out to put a sexist boss in his place and end up running the company, features songs and score by Dolly Parton, who starred in the original movie and wrote its hit theme song.
The book is by Patricia Resnick, who co-wrote the film version.
The play was nominated for four Tony Awards in 2009 and received a record 15 Drama Desk nominations. This is the first touring production.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better experience on my first Broadway show,” said Parton in press materials. “I’ve had the privilege of working with an amazing group of people who have become like family to me. I can’t wait for this show to hit the road so people across the country can see why I’m so proud of everyone involved.”
The touring show is directed by Jeff Calhoun, a Tony-nominated director and choreographer. The co–choreographer is Lisa Stevens; scenic design is by Ken Foy; costume design is by five-time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long; and lighting design is by Tony Award and Drama Desk Award winner Ken Billington,
“I met Dolly Parton as a chorus kid dancing in the film ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ only a few years after ‘9 to 5’ was already a hit movie. It was a thrill to work with her then and an honor and privilege to be entrusted to direct and choreograph this exciting new tour,” the press release quotes Calhoun.
